We booked our tour of Geocaching HQ
We are taking our daughter on her first official college visit this April. As a true geocaching family does, we looked to see what we could add to our trip.... a couple new states, a new country, the Stash Plaque. Obviously, being so close to Seattle we have to make a trip to Mecca Geocaching HQ. We have read up on the tour a little bit and it looks really cool to see the nuts and bolts behind the hobby we all play. There is even a huge geocache capable of holding a bunch of trackables inside the building. Immediately our thoughts went to hosting another Super Quick Travel Bug Event before we leave to take any trackables that want to go to HQ. Also being us, we have planned a few other event to meet up with local cachers as we explore the …
Video: Cache Tales (kayak caching)
Here is another geocaching videographer. This one is out geocaching and kayaking. Give it a look. Subscribe if you like it.
Improving geocache logs
To log your geocache find online, all that you are required to do is put something in that little box. It could be a simple “I found it.”… or what you are likely to se a lot: TFTC. The acronym TFTC stands for Thanks For The Cache. I know its not brain surgery but it can be confusing to new cachers the first time they see it.
TFTCTNLNSL?
This is absolutely not what you should write for a log and I’ll explain why. Think back to when you were in high school and you got your yearbook. There was always that one idiot that like to write between the pages. “I’m the first to sign your crack.” It seemed funny at the time but years later when he died in a horrific floor waxing incident and the last communication from his was that lame line – a little…
Does geocaching need a mentor program?
If you have been around geocaching for a while you have no doubt heard the idea of a mentor program tossed out. This discussion usually comes about after a new cacher comes on the scene and makes a few mistakes. Nowadays with more and more people being introduced to geocaching through the intro app on their smartphones this seems to come up more frequently. It’s understandable. No, it really is. Does the intro app tell you not to hide near schools? Does the intro app tell you that your log should be waterproof? Even if it does, who reads instructions on a game for the phone?
I know that when we started we made mistakes, a bunch of mistakes and we had people to talk to. We got advice in the field and at events. Eventually, we were lucky enou…
Geocaching SWAG
We have all seen geocaching SWAG and various personalized items. They can take many forms from handmade tags to custom pens. There is really no limit to the SWAG you can get associated with your team name. The first time we had something made with our team name on it was when we designed a stamp. That sounds impressive but really its not.
[1]We used the same logo that our brother made before for our profile. We went online and found a site that would make us some custom stamps. I don’t remember how much it cost but I do know it was seriously cheap. Pretty sure we had a coupon. They were so cheap that we bought 10. Since we bought something they gave us a free box of business cards. Did we need business cards? Of course not but they were fre…
Upgrading your profile
I think as geocachers we all want to improve every aspect of our game. One of those aspects that we tend to neglect is our public profile page on Geocaching.com. Most of the cachers’ profiles that I’ve come across either have posted stats from a third-party application or maybe a couple pictures and that’s the extent of their profile page
this has always seemed odd to me. In a high-tech adventure game – It’s essentially a webpage that many of us are underutilizing or even leaving blank.
In the past I have added some stats that I got from project-GC.com and mygeocachingprofile.com both of which just left it looking kind of cluttered and junky.
I decided recently that I was going to start from scratch with the whole profile page. I searched …
Geocaching on Periscope - yay or nay?
Periscope, for those of you who have yet to give in to your voyeuristic urges, is a platform for broadcasting anything you want live on the internet. Their official tagline is “Explore the world through someone else’s eyes.” Put simply – you can broadcast from anywhere you have a signal and people can interact by making comments. So, how can we or should we incorporate this into geocaching?
There are already a couple of people using the #geocaching tag. Joshua the Geocaching Vlogger, HeadHardHat, and the guys from the UK Geocaching Podcast are some of the early adopters. My thought is that it is a neat platform to have some interaction with geocachers all over the world while they are out in the field.
Some potential good uses:
- connecting wit…
Multi-cache - love, hate, or meh?
If you have been geocaching for any amount of time you have come across a multi cache, we all have. This is where our commonality ends. Cachers tend to fall into one of three categories after that. You either love, hate or just don't care about them. We have gone through a few stages in our house. At first, we were intrigued by the idea of a multi stage adventure. Then we tried to find a few and we got stuck a stage or two in. You probably know the frustration of not being able to finish a geocache you have started. Its that I'm going to murder kittens level frustration that makes you instantly glad you don't control nuclear weapons.
Probably obvious but we laid off multicaches for a long time. When only started doing them again for a nearb…
D5 T5 Geocaching
We love all types of geocaching as a family but there is one category of geocaches that I get really excited about - 5/5s. Technically this category encompasses a wide variety of caches, especially considering the currently frozen category of Challenge caches. The ones I'm speaking of though are true 5 difficulty and 5 terrain caches. I know this is subjective and I am by no means an expert but... after several months of recovering from a couple major surgeries, I'm more excited than ever to engage in a true geocaching adventure. I have my eyes set on a couple of them. I need these now more than ever. Unfortunately I'm still healing and some of them are outside of my state. That's ok. that just means I have more time to plan and sucker co…
2016 Geocaching Predictions
I am going to go out on a limb and make my predictions for what I think we will see in the world of geocaching for 2016. Hopefully in about 366 days from now (it’s a leap year) I will have some of these right. Either that or I will be able to laugh uproariously at my complete ineptitude. These predictions are what I see happening in the sport obsession game of geocaching and do not necessarily have anything to do with my plans for caching in 2016.
- Challenges – will be back after the moratorium with their own icon and will require some type of automated checker like the one being used by project-gc currently.
- USA’s first GIGA – will occur in Denver this summer. I am allowing my personal hopes to cloud this one but that’s OK because this is my…
Create A free Geocaching Trackable
Hello all, I found this great website where you can make a FREE geocaching trackable. The only downside is that it will not be a trackable on geocaching.com. How it worksis it gives you a number through there website, you print it out and attach it to somthing then release it in to the wild. Other geocachers are able to track it at the same website. Sign up at http://www.geotrackable.org.
Keep on Cachin’
